Dori is a fantastic choreographer to collaborate with on any genre of production. She has a background in classical ballet, jazz and modern dance, but also works as a pilates instructor and understands how to inject specific styles of movement and individual character development into her choreography. She plans movement and dance with a strong story that benefits the play as a whole, and she is lovely to collaborate with as a director. She takes every consideration into meeting the director’s vision, and she is able to work with students (and professionals) at all levels and ages. The two productions she provided choreography for at our program were vastly different in style and performance. One (Cinderella) involved classical ballroom dancing with a large cast, complicated costumes and historically accurate postures and mannerisms. Our second production (Little Shop of Horrors) integrated several varieties of movement and dance, from hip hop to modern to classical ballet. Dori moved seamlessly from one production to the next: she was always prepared, ready to improvise and solve problems, and she truly cared for each of the students and their growth throughout the rehearsal process. Dori also stepped in as a guest artist for several beginning drama classes, teaching students movement and dance as part of their fine arts curriculum. The students loved her energy, precision and kindness, and often asked for more dance classes.
Ultimately, along with her extensive experience, incredible work ethic and a beautiful creative method, Dori is lovely to work with as a choreographer and collaborative colleague. Her positivity and vision make each rehearsal a rewarding experience, and the final product in performance is always remarkable. I would recommend her as a choreographer for any kind of production, educational or professional. She has a skill set that spans all forms of dance and movement, and she knows how to bring out expression and storytelling with her choreography.
My daughters, Paris and Natalie, had the pleasure of working with Dori Allwein when they were members of Pizazz Song and Dance Troupe at St. Pete City Theatre in 2009-2010. Dori is an excellent dance instructor and choreographer. More importantly, she is a positive, kind-hearted, caring person who serves as an outstanding role model to the children she teaches. My daughters looked forward to her classes and always came home excited about dance. We moved back home to McKinney, TX in 2011 and my daughters have continued with musical theatre and dance and are stand out performers at their high school. Paris and Natalie still remember with fondness working with Dori and how much they learned from her. She is a real gem!
The moment we met Dori we knew she was absolutely the perfect person to coach our daughter in preparation for her competition. She is so positive, enthusiastic, sweet, uplifting, gentle and last but not least gifted in dance. Dori was very open to listen to our daughter to make sure she was comfortable with each and every movement. She wanted to make sure this came from inside of her and not just a movement to perform for the sake of a routine, but to make it authentic and natural. This impressed us so much and therefore also impressed the judges.
The judges comments on the choreography were “great use of stage”, “great form”, “beautiful technique”, beautiful legs and emotion”. She also got the top Superior rating. All of these wonderful comments can be traced back to Dori who brought this all out in her with her talent and beautiful spirit. Whatever future endeavors Dori will be a part of, you can be sure she will be giving 110 % of her time and talents and she will be a sheer delight to collaborate with in any way she is needed!
It has been my pleasure to have Dori Harnly-Allwein as our main choreographer and dance teacher for our summer theatre camps, children’s theatre workshops, PIZAZZ song and dance troupe and tween theatre program. Dori is so creative and efficient; she is able to quickly assess students’ abilities and make them all “shine” on stage. Our theatre camps run two weeks and at the end of each session, we are able to present a full-length Broadway show, featuring forty children, ages 6-14 with varying levels of ability. Dori frequently choreographs huge production numbers in a very short amount of time. She comes to class, on time and prepared; she doesn’t waste time. She gets right to work! Students respect her and she seldom has to raise her voice. I cannot praise Dori enough! I would highly recommend her as a teacher and instructor for all ages; she is very pleasant and kind to students and staff, alike. She has been a tremendous asset to our program and she has been hard to replace, as a choreographer. She will always have a special place in my heart as well as in the hearts of all the students she has taught over the years.
Choreographing and teaching musical theater and dance for over 20 years.
Dori has spent most of her life either performing, teaching, and/or choreographing for the musical theater stage. Passionate in sharing her love for musical theater as a choreographer and educator, she is quite experienced in staging full scale productions.
While living in Florida she was lead choreographer for a number of different theaters where she regularly staged full scale productions in as little as two weeks. She has worked with all ages, 5 through adult, and loves working with newbies as well as those working toward a professional career.
